About Play-Base
Play-Base Edinburgh (originally The Play-Base Project) began in 1995 as a founding member of a consortium of voluntary organisations that shared a common concern for children and families. During 1997 the consortium was reconstructed and Play-Base took over the responsibility for the training programme, supported by the City of Edinburgh Council Community Education Department.
The main focus of the training was, and continues to be, a programme of accessible courses for playworkers, parents and child carers. Having constituted in July 1999 as an independent voluntary organisation with charitable status, Play-Base moved to the Community Education premises at Duncan Place, Leith. This has enabled Play-Base to develop its services and to continue its links with Community Education, now Community Learning and Development.
In 2001 with the departure of our full time worker, the staff hours were changed to employ a part-time Training Co-ordinator and Administrator. In 2005 the Management Committee agreed to change the status of Play-Base and began proceedings to become a Company Limited by Guarantee. This was achieved in 2006. The new name is Play-Base Edinburgh and the work of Play-Base is managed by the Board of Directors. The aims and objectives remain the same as those agreed by the original members. The number of courses provided has increased and new courses have been developed in response to need. Strong links with both statutory and voluntary organisations ensure that we address the needs of parents, playworkers and child carers.
